Graph theory bondy murty solutions manual Mar 24, 2008 .The present invention relates to a corrosion resistant coating composition and more particularly to a corrosion resistant coating composition for aircraft and methods for applying such a corrosion resistant coating to substrates such as aircraft.
Conventional aircraft are required to be covered with corrosion resistant coatings. Fuselage, wing, tail section, and other parts of the aircraft require the presence of a suitable corrosion resistant coating. The same is true for a so-called salt air wind tunnel or "flight tunnel".
Historically, aircraft are coated with chromate compositions. Chromate compositions have the disadvantage of requiring a high temperature (e.g. 1000.degree. F.) for curing, making it difficult to apply the coating on aircraft. In addition, such coatings have a short life and must be reapplied periodically.
Presently, aircraft are coated with a dip coating process using a solution of an epoxy and one or more solvents. The epoxy may be a suitable monomer such as an epoxy of bisphenol A or the like. Such epoxy compositions contain curing agents, accelerators and modifiers. The solvents typically include alcohols, ketones, ethers, and the like. The solvent is evaporated from the coating solution after application to the aircraft.
Such epoxy coatings have the disadvantage of containing volatile components, which evaporate during cure. The evaporated components pollute the atmosphere and may cause toxicity and health hazards to workers applying the coating. Further, the fumes generated by the evaporation of the solvents contributes to the air pollution problem. The evaporation of solvents also causes the temperature of the aircraft to increase during cure, which may result in warping of the aircraft. In addition, the added weight of the evaporated materials makes the aircraft less efficient.
Borate compositions, such as those sold by Henkel under the trademark BIOSAFE, have been proposed for use as corrosion resistant coatings. Borate compositions have the disadvantage of being moderately toxic, due to the borax which is a part of the composition. It would be desirable to have a non-toxic, and hence less harmful, corrosion resistant coating.
