Distress ACHD*

*Distress in Adults with Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD): Screening, Protective and Risk Factors, and Predictors of Outcome

Previous studies have shown that the prevalence of mental health disorders among adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) is high due to the stress and psychological strain to which these patients are exposed. Early identification of individual psychological distress can contribute to the prevention of mental disorders and improve recovery prospects through the timely inclusion of psychotherapeutic support.

The aim of this research project is therefore, in an initial step, to adapt and validate a questionnaire specifically for ACHD patients that is intended to help identify stress and psychological burden at an early stage. In a subsequent study, the project will examine which factors may protect ACHD patients from stress and which factors may increase their risk of experiencing stress. In addition, the project will investigate how this stress affects quality of life and overall health in ACHD patients.

A general objective of the project is to further encourage patients to make use of psychosocial services in order to provide them with the best possible support in challenging situations.

Pregnancy and CHD*

*Employment, Body Image, and Self-Esteem after Pregnancy in Women with Congenital Heart Disease

In cooperation with University Medical Center Göttingen (Prof. Dellas) and Hannover Medical School (Prof. Geyer), this study primarily aims to address the following research questions:

How do pregnancy and the course of pregnancy in women with congenital heart disease (CHD) influence their decision to continue working or to return to work after parental leave? Are there differences depending on educational level and professional position? What impact does pregnancy have on body image and self-esteem in women with CHD? Do body image and/or self-esteem play a role in the assessment of physical performance capacity when deciding whether to return to work?
