Naida Paruva on 27 March 2019 by - MUMBAI, March 24 (IANS) THE Maharashtra government’s decision to pave the way for the construction of more luxury hotels in the coastal state – part of the ‘master plan’ of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis -- has the opposition blacked-out the state’s Marine Protected Area (MPA). Earlier, a government decision to pave the way for construction of two other hotels at Dandeli, 75 km from here, had faced stiff protests by activists with the fisheries department. While one of the other two proposals at an unidentified location facing Dantewadi in Thane district near Dharavi is yet to take shape, the design of the third proposal at Attardevi beach in Begaon town has been leaked to the media. Both Fadnavis and the industries department were unavailable for comment. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state has been driven by the industry to push through measures to lure tourists.
And now plans for a slew of luxury hotels in the coastal region of the state has raised fears among environmentalists and activists that the MPA may face disruption again. “The government has succeeded in redesigning the MPA, which was a coastal protection zone, as a ‘development zone’. This means the three hotels would now be approved instead of a conditional approval for tourism projects, which means there will be no strict restrictions on their construction,” said
